An exciting new opportunity is opening for travelers visiting Bhutan through Phuentshogling. From September 2026, eligible visitors using the 24-hour Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) waiver will be able to travel beyond the existing Rinchending boundary and explore two additional destinations: Milarepa Lhakhang and the Pachu Community Ecotourism Site.
Previously, travelers using the waiver were required to remain within the designated area of Phuentshogling and could not continue beyond the Rinchending checkpost. The expansion offers visitors a chance to experience more of Bhutan's culture, natural beauty, and community life during a short visit, transforming Phuentshogling from a convenient entry point into a rewarding destination of its own.
Milarepa Lhakhang and Pachu Community Ecotourism Site
Milarepa Lhakhang offers an introduction to Bhutan's rich spiritual heritage, while the Pachu Community Ecotourism Site provides an opportunity to enjoy the peaceful landscape and connect with local communities. Together, these destinations create a more meaningful experience for travelers who may have limited time but still wish to discover the character and charm of Bhutan.
How to Travel Beyond Rinchending Under the Waiver
The expanded access is expected to begin during the Harvest Festival. Visitors wishing to travel beyond Rinchending under the 24-hour waiver will need to join an approved tourism package and be accompanied by a licensed guide. This ensures that the journey remains well organised, comfortable, and enriching while supporting local guides, accommodation providers, communities, and other tourism-related businesses.
For travelers, this change means greater variety, deeper cultural engagement, and more memorable ways to experience Bhutan without committing to a longer journey. It is especially appealing to regional visitors seeking a convenient introduction to the Kingdom or a short yet meaningful escape from nearby destinations.
More information regarding the available packages, travel arrangements, and visitor requirements is expected soon. Stay tuned with Book Bhutan Tour as we bring you further updates and help you make the most of this exciting new opportunity to explore Bhutan.
